playlist

I'm back with another playlist! At this point, I think my blog has unintentionally become a music blog, which I suppose I should've seen as a potentiality from its conception. However I am not willing to declare it so, as I have roughly four rolls of film and three disposables from forever ago that I haven't developed and I need a space to share them. And where else would I pen juicy stories about life at my desk and the rare occasions I leave it? Journals don't work for me. I need the attention this blog receives (ok, the supposition of attention it generates). And most importantly, what would you do without my eloquent blathering? So, let's continue to classify what we have here a 'lifestyle blog'. Especially because this upcoming week arrives with the potential of a long overdue recollection of the 6+ months I've been absent from here (a catch up post!!). Maybe. Or I could just make a list of all of my dream shoes instead. We'll see what happens.

Back to music. Shockingly, I didn't get a chance to put together a playlist for the earlier portion of May, so this will have to do for the whole month. I had a tough time deciding the order of these songs which doesn't happen very often, but I ended up with a pretty darn smooth-flowing list. So listen to it in order if you can!

may / part one + may / part two
Where Do You Go / Bonny Doon
    Tricky / Born Ruffians
New Day Tonight / Michael Rault
    Farther Away / Sam Valdez
    Babysitter / The Ruminaters
    Fox / Spooky Mansion
    You, Forever / Sam Evian
    Message Erased / Deeper
Canyon / The Echocentrics (feat. Alex Mass & Jazz Mills)
You and Your Knife / The Buttertones
Name on a Matchbook / Springtime Carnivore
Far East Man / George Harrison
    Me Myself / Las Rosas
    Fool / Molly Burch
Tracy Had a Hard Day Sunday / The Clientele
Who's to Blame / Good Morning
In A Mirror / Born Ruffians

Yes, there are two Born Ruffians songs because they're my favorite band and because I saw them last week. It was the best. show. I've. ever. been. to. This really should be written in all caps and in bold (heavy emphasis on best. show. ever.), but I'll reserve that kind of excitement exclusively for twitter. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this post and playlist and poster. On the topic of the poster, lovely typeface Savate by Wech, is from the Velvetyne foundry.

P.S. I was racing against my mouse's battery life and I lost. It died and now I have to use the arrow keys on the keyboard and it's really challenging. I will never forgive Apple for not coming up with a mouse that can charge WHILE you use it, but that's ok. Enjoy your memorial day weekend! Steal the aux cord from your relatives and play this playlist. They're guaranteed to love it. :) xx

It's been a few months (wow!) since I've been here. I never intended on taking such a lengthy break from blogging, but up until this weekend I've been working every. single. day. since late January, so I never had the chance to stop by. I suppose I've been pretty busy. I feel like it's fitting to provide a short summary of all the occurrences of the last three/four months, but I hardly remember what happened. I mean it all kind of smushes together into a sticky lump and it just becomes hard to pull apart at this point. Essentially, I drew a lot of portraits, packaged a lot of enamel pins, picked up a lot of prints, designed a lot of layouts, listened to a lot of music, spent a lot of time in line at the post office, illustrated a lot, and completed a lot of homework. A lot of everything, except blogging and sleeping.

Anyway, this summer I plan on posting twice a week (I don't know if that will actually happen, though). I'm probably going to cut down to either monthly or bi-monthly playlists and I'll probably end up with a lot of posts about what I did during the week. For now, enjoy this playlist I put together with songs I've been listening to over my absence along with my absolute favorite Beatles song. See you in a few days. Probably. xx

Here I am again. Delayed playlist and words; you shouldn't be surprised anymore as it has become usual (I'm cringing at how much I've neglected my blog during the last few months). I had another busy week catching up on illustrations and other important things that I'd been forced to push aside by the last grueling weeks of the semester before summer. Which reminds me, I mentioned plans for making a portfolio of my illustrations sometime in the early spring and I never actually braved the task... until now! I finally have (a great part of) my portfolio up on my blog. You can check it out here or you can just click on the moth in the right sidebar.

Anyway, I am putting an end to the chain of neglecting my piece of the crazy thing we call the internet now. I will never catch up any other way... so I'm posting two playlists at once. Maybe that's not a bad thing though. What's better than new music to accompany summer adventures and long car rides?

It's getting late and I'm quite in the mood to write. I'll just start with what's new.

New music from: The Strokes (!!!!!!), Weird Dreams, and Whitney (and there were many more, but I'll save those for next week)
If you don't already know, I am a major fan of The Strokes and just yesterday they released their first new material since three years (their EP, Future Present Past) and if you follow along on social media, you were able to hear it a week or so earlier. This obviously meant that a lot of dancing and jumping up and down ensued. In my opinion, the song "Drag Queen" is what propels The Strokes forward once again.  I guess many of us feared the worst. It seemed as if the group was held together by nothing stronger than the cheap, dried up glue found in the back aisle of the grocery store--we had the fear they would no longer make anything new together. This EP provided me with the most welcome wake-up call: it isn't over. Which brings me back to "Drag Queen". To put it in one word the song is heavy (but not overwhelming); somehow it's far from light and airy, yet it still drifts easily through the summer air. Scattered with anomalous guitars, the subtle notion of 80's nostalgia, and odd lyrics, it stays true to The Strokes' sound, but brings about an entirely different angle. My inner fan girl screams at just the idea. | Weird Dreams put out a new single, "Calm". I've been quite obsessed with their 2012 album, Coreography, and as of lately, I was starting to think they broke up until they released their earlier single "Ladder" (also in 2016). "Calm" is, well, calm. The sound of a lone guitar rings throughout the entirety of the song accompanied by soft vocals and a faint chorus of synths. Dreamy and perfect. [wow, I just sat here laughing for a few minutes because it's now realllly late and I wrote 3016, instead of 2016; gosh, that idea is just terrifying] | A certain album I've been anticipating even more so after I saw the band in concert earlier in May was released yesterday--Whitney's Light Upon the Lake. Of course I pre-ordered it and was lucky enough to receive it a few days early. Let me tell you, I was spinning that translucent, blue beauty non-stop (I have to admit, I still am). Where do I start? I guess by saying that "No Woman" is my absolute favorite off of the entire album and that the entire album may just be one of my top favorites of 2016 (it along with Delirium, that is). Would it be horrible if I quoted myself? Well, I will anyway because the description I wrote a month ago holds true and I like it. I'll just insert the words "Light Upon the Lake is the most amazing combination of" right here and now, here I go: "everything--twangy guitars, a trumpet, keys, bass, percussion, and a falsetto voice floating above it all". Insert "and all of it" and continue my shameless quoting of myself "coils together to form a strange and satisfying combination drifting from folk to psychedelic to soul". It is something special that shakes up the music scene. It is what the world lacked and didn't know it was lacking until its arrival. It is something you should hear. Soooooo go buy it/stream it/share it. I promise you, it's the perfect soundtrack for those sticky nights that lead to stupid ideas (for me, that is writing until the wee hours of a new day with the humidity seeping in through my half-open window; I know, I'm a wild one).

In concert: Old Man Canyon with Monogold
I'm just realizing now that this happened exactly a week ago and I would be arriving home in about another hour or so and now I just got a bit sad because it was boatloads of fun. Anyway, back sometime in November, I saw The Paper Kites and that's when I found the group who would become one of my most favorite bands (Old Man Canyon!!). The sweet, dripping psychedelic-drenched sound that floods the ears is unforgettable and incomparable to all of those other bands of the genre. I'm trying to prevent myself from writing an entire album review right here, right now, but I think you should prepare yourself for more reading because apparently I never did when Delirium came out... As soon as the intertwining sounds of vintage synths and guitar begin to float about on opening track "Learn to Forget" you are instantly transported into a hazy night, saturated in pinks and dreams of times left abandoned further and further in the past. Start listening, and it only gets better with each sound, gliding seamlessly through some ethereal, glittery land that no artist has managed to reach before. Two songs in and you'll hear one of my favorites, "Hollow Tree". Vocals, at times eerie, melt and contort into those gorgeous, mysterious synths and pull you deeper into the masterpiece. "I Don't Wanna Go Out" floats closer to the bittersweet end of the LP and only gains more of the charm that can't help spilling over from the very beginning. Veiled in groovy undertones, the song remains smooth and leans on the slower side, yet it shimmers just as effortlessly as the others. "Sugar City" leads listeners out with nearly seven minutes of dynamic, sticky sweetness. A sonic endeavor like no other, really. Quiet, yet loud, engulfing, dramatic. It's really something special. And you're left with the desire to have another listen, and another after that. (ooh, and I forgot to mention how mindblowing all of the lyrics are) | Now, what I was actually going to write about: Monogold opened for Old Man Canyon and wow! They are so incredibly talented. That falsetto and their simple setup had me absolutely stunned. Definitely another rare gem of a band that you should go check out. Like I said, this was my second time seeing Old Man Canyon in concert and it was even more amazing this time around. Just imagine all of the craziness you just read a few sentences back, but even 1000x better. That's just how it is.

Obsessed with: Horsebeach, A Different Life, Vacation II
These albums are just so perfect for summer.

Goldie oldie: "Sleep Apnea", "The Witching Hour", and "6-5000"
Yeah, I know these aren't old, but they come with a lot of memories for me and they're all definitely golden.

That's it! If you read all this, wow! Good job. I'm glad you enjoy the parts of my scattered mind present at almost 3 in the morning. I'll be back to posting normally this week. I also have a DIY post planned, so expect that. See ya soon, friends. xx

P.S. The two photos above are from my most favorite series of photos that I've ever taken up to this day. Expect more soon. I am SO excited about how they turned out.

playlist

I'm not going to pretend that I don't realize this playlist is thirteen songs long and I'm posting it on a Tuesday (because I've fallen way behind); I realize that. But, I'm really excited about the songs I chose. This jumble of tunes is wonderful for summer drives and includes one of my favourites to scream along to on such occasions.

Anyway, here's a little update/rundown:

New music from: Old Man Canyon, Young Rival, Hala, and Twin Peaks.
Old Man Canyon released a single and I am already obsessed. | Young Rival released their EP, Strange Light, and I got it in the mail on Friday. It is beautiful and perfect for summer and I can't stop spinning it. Go buy it/listen to it/enjoy it x1000. | Hala released Spoonfed and it is the new and refreshing sound I've been craving. Definitely deserves a listen. | Twin Peaks released their second full-length, Down in Heaven. If you want to hear some great rock, look no further.

In concert: Hippo Campus with Riothorse Royale.
Riothorse Royale opened for Hippo Campus and I was blown away by beautiful vocals. Talk about girl power! I am excited to hear more from them. This was my second time seeing Hippo Campus and wow. SO. MUCH. TALENT. Really. Listening to their recorded songs is one thing, but hearing them live is truly an experience. If you have the chance, do see them.

I've just been listening to these four albums a lot this month.

Goldie oldie: "Foxes Mate For Life".
I mean this isn't really an old song, but I've been listening to it for quite some time. This is the jam to scream along to while driving. There's nothing better than Born Ruffians for those kinds of car trips. Plus, what's more fun than capturing the attention of various strangers at red lights? Not much, eh?

I am on summer break now. FINALLY. So, I will hopefully be posting more regularly. I will try to post my playlists every Wednesday, like in the good old days. Also, those iPhone backgrounds will be coming, as promised four other times. xx

Last week has been one of the most busy ones of the entire year. I wrote a lot during that time, despite my absence from this little corner of cyberspace, here. I will not write too much today, but here is a brief rundown: Red Hot Chili Peppers put out an INCREDIBLE new single and I am completely in love with it, COIN put out a new single--"Talk Too Much"--and it is the catchiest thing ever. ever. , I missed listening to The Strokes so I threw an oldie in for good measure, and I topped my list off with a few other new and old favorites. I will hopefully have another list ready (and on time) this week. Also, keep looking out for those iPhone backgrounds. They will come someday soon, I promise. For now, enjoy the rest of the photos I took from a little bit ago. xx

This week has been quite the whirlwind. I honestly have no idea how I accomplished so much on so little sleep. On Monday, I got the sudden urge to capture the beauty of spring before all of the flowers disappeared, so I abandoned all of my responsibilities and did just that (I will post more photos soon, I included one in this post). On Tuesday, I picked up on all of those responsibilities from the prior day, finished a painting, prepared things for my shop, embroidered on three photos, and went to a concert. I got home at about half past one, fell asleep by two-ish, and woke up at six. I ran on a little bit over three hours of sleep and hung up a large amount of my artwork for an art show with much vigor, after which I crashed and could barely stay awake. Today was a sleepy, frenzied haze and though I got so much done, I feel like I didn't get anything done at all; at least I made this playlist (and it's really good). A grand week it has been.

///

Like I mentioned before, I saw one of my all time favourite bands, Wild Nothing, at Thalia Hall on Tuesday. Let me just say WOW; it was a dream come true. They played at such a beautiful venue and gosh they sounded surreal. Charlie Hilton (from Blouse) and Chicago's very own, Whitney, performed prior to Wild Nothing. Charlie's voice was just a dream and the sweet sounds made by the rest of the band flooded the room with some kind of  '80s charm that was so perfectly juxtaposed against a bundle of melancholic lyrics--somewhat resembling those of Blouse's catalog. Whitney took the stage next and exuded sheer talent. Each song played was so full of emotion. Everything--twangy guitars, a trumpet, keys, bass, percussion, and a falsetto voice floating above it all--coiled together to form a strange and satisfying combination drifting from folk to psychedelic to soul. Wild Nothing came on stage sometime near eleven and the energy from the crowd doubled. I danced even more. The band played song after song. The sticky melodies of tunes from their newest album, Life of Pause, and old favourites like "Paradise" and "Live in Dreams" thundered in the room. A perfect mix of '80s influence, cloudy subtleties of surf rock, and dream pop drifted about us all and brought so many smiles to a sea of faces. Oh, how I wish I could live it all again. It still hasn't hit me quite yet--I was lucky enough to see a band that I've loved for such a long time, to hear songs that brought back so many memories and created new ones. This night will definitely go down as one of my absolute favourites of this year. The lack of sleep was most definitely worth it. xx
